A semiconductor fab ultrapure water plant is only as stable as its pretreatment section. If RO membranes are fouled by particles or colloids, the entire UPW train suffers swings in resistivity, TOC and silica that threaten wafer yield. The DOW UF membrane SFP-2860 / SFD-2860 module sits directly upstream of the RO array and removes suspended solids, bacteria and colloids to a level that allows the RO and downstream electrodeionization to perform at their design level, day after day.

The SFP-2860 packs 51 m2 of PVDF hollow fiber into a standard 8-inch module and operates in outside-in dead end mode, which suits the continuous high-availability duty of semiconductor water plants. The module tolerates sodium hypochlorite cleaning up to 2000 mg/L, an important feature when biological fouling must be stripped from the fibers during warm months.

Applications

Semiconductor and flat panel display fabs use the SFP-2860 in the make-up water plant between pretreatment clarifiers and the RO / degasifier / EDI chain. By delivering silt-free, colloid-free RO feed, the UF modules allow the RO to operate at stable flux and the EDI stacks to produce 18 MOhm-cm water without interruption. The same configuration serves data center cooling make-up and pharmaceutical purified water generation.

For expansion projects, additional SFP-2860 modules are simply added to the existing rack, and the automatic backwash system adjusts the sequencing without changing the plant control philosophy. Our engineers provide flux projection and rack sizing based on the raw water analysis and target UPW capacity.
