EDI is a new type of ultra-pure water technology developed in the 1990s, Its development is a revolutionary advance in the history of pure water production technology. EDI can replace traditional ion exchange technology, produce stable deionized water. Unlike the hybrid ion exchange device, the EDI system does not require chemical regeneration, and does not have to be stopped for Adding resins or chemical regeneration. Therefore, EDI can achieve continuous production of water, and water quality is stable.Meanwhile, equipment investment and operating expenses are minimized.


The Electrodeionization (EDI) Membrane Stack is an advanced water purification technology that combines ion exchange resins, ion-selective membranes, and direct current (DC) electricity to remove ionized contaminants from water continuously and without chemical regeneration. This innovative system delivers high-purity water sustainably and cost-effectively.

Core Technology & Working Principle:

  1. Modular Stack Design: The EDI stack comprises multiple cell pairs sandwiched between electrodes (anode and cathode). Each cell pair consists of:

    • Cation-Exchange Membranes (CEM): Allow passage of positive ions (e.g., Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺).

    • Anion-Exchange Membranes (AEM): Allow passage of negative ions (e.g., Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻).

    • Dilute (Product) Compartments: Filled with mixed-bed ion exchange resin beads, positioned between the CEM and AEM.

    • Concentrate (Reject) Compartments: Adjacent to the resin compartments, receiving rejected ions.

  2. Ion Removal & Transport: Feed water flows through the dilute compartments. Under the influence of an applied DC electric field:

    • Ions in the water are attracted towards the oppositely charged electrodes.

    • Cations pass through the CEM into an adjacent concentrate compartment but are blocked by the AEM.

    • Anions pass through the AEM into an adjacent concentrate compartment but are blocked by the CEM.

    • The ion exchange resin within the dilute compartments acts as a conductive medium, enhancing ion transport and facilitating the continuous electrochemical regeneration of the resin itself via water splitting (H₂O → H⁺ + OH⁻).

  3. Concentration & Rejection: Ions migrating into the concentrate compartments are continuously flushed away by a separate concentrate (reject) stream. Purified water (deionized) exits the dilute compartments.
